The bicycles of Amsterdam are mesmerizing. They flow constantly up and down the streets, over canals, shooting along narrow alleyways. Not the thin sporty multi-geared ones manned by bespandexed racers in Central Park, but hefty workhorse bicycles, thick wheels, broad handlebars, with baskets and satchels and wheelbarrow-like wooden carts painted with bright red flowers. Girls riding erect with scarfs tucked into wool coats, hair flying out behind them, freshly applied lipstick and good shoes. A man with an iPod and speakers strapped to his chest: the Dutch version of the Boombox Bicycle. A girl hanging off the back of one bike, one arm flung around the waist of the boy pedaling, feet flexed away from the spokes of the rear tire.

Imagine: to feel the wind in your hair, the beginning of a hum of your favorite song forming inside your head.

We sit in a cafe on the corner, poking at our bacon and eggs, “second-hands” albums in plastic bags at our feet, hypnotized by their constant motion.

Two old ladies sit behind the register at Oxfam, surrounded by other people’s old things. An erotic piece of pottery and a box of bright red clown noses.

“She wouldn’t shut up, you know.”

“Mm-hmm.”

“I told her to go stand over there and she just kept on going on and on.”

“Mm-hmm. What time do we close?”

“About now, you know.”

[…]

“Just kept going on and on.”

[…]

“We do see life, though, don’t we.”
