Research.

I JUST watched this, like 72 hours ago and haven’t stopped thinking about it. I started to get anxious during it, and wanted everybody to calm down and go work in some fields or get angry or spend some time with a Midwestern mother or something, just to snap out of it. I felt massive amounts of unease, because no matter how soft you talk, shit is still going down. Don’t smile while crying.
And then the last scene, I was like “This is only what you want until you don’t want it anymore. RECOGNIZE PATTERNS. And PUT some GODDAMN _____ ON”.
I haven’t been that edgy watching a movie since ‘Nick and Norah’s Infinite NOBODY COMMUNICATES THEIR TRUE FEELINGS Night’.
Greta Gerwig is lovely though. She/Hannah reminded me of a lot of people I love but don’t see often.

I actually have not seen this film yet! But now, thanks, I’m very much excited to. I was just tickled to find a picture of Mark Duplass and Greta Gerwig together - in bathing suits, no less - because I’m kind of (not so secretly) loving both of them right now. And so I posted the picture without knowing what it’s about. This film would be the obvious next step in our relationship.
(I am predicting that people will be very much sick of me using the word “mumblecore” by, oh, April 11th?)

tyler coates reviews greenberg

…because the Internet needed another Greenberg review.

I’m in the midst of trying to write this thing on Mark Duplass, because somehow he seems topical, and I feel that if I write something topical, it might have a chance of being relevant to someone other than myself for a change. So I’m researching “mumblecore,” and Googling “Mark Duplass” a little bit too obsessively, and all these Greenberg references keep popping up. So now I’m realizing I need to see this film pretty soon, even though Ben Stiller kind of makes me itchy.
The problem with this is that my MDTV (Mark Duplass Tunnel Vision) is currently keeping me from reading any review of Greenberg without skimming it for his name. While his name didn’t appear in the review linked above, it was the first review I’ve read all the way through that made me realize that the female blonde actress in the film who isn’t Jennifer Jason Leigh is “mumblecore actress” Greta Gerwig, she of the awesome Duplass Brothers film Baghead. Greta Gerwig was my favorite part of that film, and I’m psyched to see her in something else.
AnotherGreenberg-related chain of thought that is an essay waiting to be written: Baumbach, Vassar, The Group, women’s reproductive rights, Obamacare. (I’m trying at this writing thing, guys. Really I am.)
