I’ve suddenly figured out the difficulty of writing a novel: it’s the part where you stop for the day, and the next day have to worm your way back into wherever your head was at the moment you left your computer on the previous day.
Why did I make her say that? What am I getting at? Why are there so many damned fragments here, leading to nothing but more stuff I’ll need to cut out later? This is like the Hoarders of novel beginnings. Where are they all going to end up? Should I be diagramming this crap?
It makes sense that Jack Kerouac took a bunch of speed and started typing on toilet paper or whatever. This seems like the only way to do it. Start typing: don’t stop. Boom: NOVEL. How in the hell would someone do this for 11 years? The picking up and the putting down and the picking back up again?
How in the hell does one do it?
