On the 20th Anniversary of Loveless
On Thursday I was trying on clothes that were popular when I was sixteen in a dressing room full of actual sixteen year old school girls in their uniforms and braces and acne under thick makeup. I was pulling on a pair of tie-dyed velvet leggings (ones that I now realize I was attracted to because they look like a rendering in fabric of the pink abstract cover of Loveless) when a Wild Flag song...

Johnny Says I'm A Witch

Saffron Hunt asked me to write a song for her about a friend who thinks she’s a witch. I won’t go into why or the background, but this is my favourite out of the 21 songs I’ve written for this so far. I tried to make it sound like the Byrds. The drums are from a Broadcast song off Tender Buttons and the whole thing is totally Gene Clark. Maybe a clumsy pastiche… I dunno
